Let me introduce myself

Profile Picture

I am a PhD student at the Center for Molecular Medicine Norway (NCMM), Oslo, Norway. I am studying gene regulation through transcription factor binding and loving it. I am using computational approaches, so I guess you can also call me a bioinformatician.

Work Experience

Doctoral Research Fellow

April 2020 - Present
Oslo, Norway

Center for Molecular medicine Norway (NCMM)

Supervisor: Anthony Mathelier
During my PhD I worked mainly with transcription factor (TF) binding as a mechanism for gene expression regulation. My main project was investigating the co-binding patterns of TFs in multiple species. I developed a pipeline COBIND that uses non-negative matrix factorisation to discover co-bind patterns. I also worked on the updates of JASPAR database as a curator and developer. More importantly, I learned an innumerable amount of things.

Staff engineer

February 2019 - May 2019
Trondheim, Norway

Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)

I worked on reviewing DNA methylation data analysis approaches and available tools.

Summer researcher

April 2015 - September 2015
Vilnius, Lithuania

Institute of Biotechnology

I was a team member of Vilnius iGEM 2015. Our team created a project called “Coliclock” for iGEM 2015 competition in Boston, USA. In the project we developed a system of time-controlled 'switch-off' of genetically modified E. coli, based on CRISPR-Cas system.

Education

Master Degree in Molecular Medicine

August 2016 - June 2018
Trondheim, Norway

Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)

Supervisors: Finn Drabløs and Morten Beck Rye
Thesis title: “Computational analysis of DNA methylation and gene expression patterns in prostate cancer” (available here)
During my studies I chose to switch from wet lab to dry lab and started learning programming and data analysis. I used computational methods to investigate DNA methylation and gene expression patterns in prostate cancer.

Bachelor Degree in Genetics

September 2012 - June 2016
Vilnius, Lithuania

Vilnius University (VU)

Supervisors: Kristina Daniunaite and Sonata Jarmalaite
Thesis title: “Novel DNA methylation biomarkers in prostate cancer”
During undergraduate studies I had my first research experience while doing thesis project. I used eperimental techniques, such as methylation-specific PCR and quantitative PCR to investigate methylation status of potential DNA methylation biomarkers in prostate cancer.
